Positioning Asa G. Hilliard, III, within the lineage of African intellectual traditions, this book examines his work as an educator, psychologist, and historian.
Beginning with a critical intellectual biography of Hilliard, this book examines how his personal life influenced his scholarship. Then it adopts an African-centered historiographical stance, highlighting how texts, institutions, and debates have been interpreted throughout Hilliard's work. Finally, it analyzes archival data from Hilliard's published books, articles, speeches, and institutional reports.
Kmt G. Shockley and Joy Banks reconstruct Hilliard's systems of thought and connect his work to classical African civilizations, Pan-African thought, Black liberation movements, and contemporary debates in decolonial epistemology.
This book tells the story of Hilliard's impact and legacy as a foundational thinker in African and Africana Studies.
