Alex Macaulay is Associate Professor and Chair of the history department at Western Carolina University, USA. He is the author of Marching in Step: Masculinity, Citizenship and The Citadel in Post-World War II America (2009). His other work has appeared in edited collections as well as in Southern Cultures, Appalachian Journal and the South Carolina Historical Society’s Carologue.
