Biography

Uma Nair is an organizational strategist, consultant, and coach specializing in reimagining how museums and cultural organizations address project management, communication, and operational strategies. With over 20 years of professional experience bridging the corporate and cultural sectors, Uma brings a unique perspective to project management within museums. Over a decade ago, she identified a critical gap in project management skills within the museum sector that hindered institutions from achieving their full potential. Since then, she has focused on closing this gap by gathering data, case studies, and practical examples that demonstrate how project management principles and technology can drive success. Through interviews with museum leaders and staff, Uma has uncovered common challenges and developed actionable solutions to enhance operations and implement strategic initiatives. Her workshops, delivered both as an employee and consultant, have helped museum teams align project scope with institutional strategy, foster collaboration, and navigate resource constraints. Uma began her career at Google India in 2004, where, as a team lead, she implemented scalable frameworks across international teams to standardize quality monitoring, developed strategic process improvements, and trained teams in operational excellence. Her leadership in establishing workflows across teams showcased her ability to design systems that upheld global standards while addressing diverse operational needs. Transitioning into corporate social responsibility, Uma created Google India’s first strategic CSR framework, managing a volunteer base of over 250 employees and spearheading projects across the country. This experience validated and reinforced her deep appreciation for the intersection of organizational impact and community engagement, a focus she has carried into her work with museums. Most recently at the Getty, Uma led the development of award-winning multilingual digital exhibitions, established operational frameworks for managing complex digital portfolios, and trained teams in sustainable project management practices. Uma holds an MBA from Osmania University, a Certificate in Museum Studies from Northwestern University, and additional training in UX Research, Design Thinking, and Visual Design. She has consistently updated her project management knowledge, initially gained through her business management degree, by taking periodic trainings in project management to stay at the forefront of industry practices.
