Description
This is the first book to analyse the history of food under 20th-century European dictatorships. Using a comparative approach, it examines the commonalities and differences in food and food policies across a range of different regimes, both those on the political right and those on the political left.
Food in 20th-Century European Dictatorships explores the impact of dictatorial governments on what people ate during these regimes. Each chapter comprises up-to-date analysis of secondary sources, as well as primary sources, including official documents, diaries, cookbooks and magazines, which illuminate the history of food and what people ate in these dictatorships. How did the policies of the regimes impact the population's diet? How did these policies impact the relationship between the people and the regime in each case? These questions and more are addressed as part of a volume that considers the experience of a range of European countries, from Nazi Germany and the USSR to Latvia, Spain, Portugal and Mussolini's Italy.
