While there have been many studies of community participation in African schooling, very little focuses on rural perspectives, little or none is grounded in African feminist frameworks, and most tend to take school-level perspectives rather than a parents' eye-view. Here Bukola Okinyole shows how the ideas and practices of the parents she works with, when combined with ideas about education developed not only in Southern feminism, but also in capability theory and the work of Pierre Bourdieu, contribute to a new understanding of what constitutes parental involvement in children's education-with a crucial emphasis on involvement that occurs outside formal contexts.
