Description
in this open access work, Hampson contends that religion is essentially a gender politics, its patterns of thought and symbolism designed to justify gender hierarchy. Further that in a post-Enlightenment age Christian claims to a unique revelation having occurred in history cannot be allowed to stand. These themes are pursued through a consideration of transcendent monotheism and an exploration of Christian doctrines and sacraments. Meanwhile Christian ethics is incommensurate with present-day thinking and feminist ideals. The Christian myth may however be said to have performed the role of a vehicle that has carried human awareness of that dimension of reality that is God. How then had we best conceptualise 'that which is God' in a manner commensurate both with our ethical norms (to which gender equality is integral) and the epistemology of modernity? Taking a major step beyond her previous publication, and drawing attention to the light thrown on the issues by Continental philosophy, this is a provocative and substantial study. Jettisoning an obsolescent mythology on both epistemological and moral grounds it attempts to articulate what spirituality and ethics could be in a post-Christian age that yet stands in continuity with the past. It may well prove a landmark book.
