B-TV: Television Under the Critical Radar

B-TV: Television Under the Critical Radar seeks to redraw—and even erase—the boundaries around what can be considered “important” or “influential” television across the globe. The series offers scholars and interested fans a view beneath and beyond prestige television, challenging the high–low critical binary that continues to shape Western media scholarship.

Books in the series examine global television aesthetics, production realities, historical periods and cultural traditions, as well as questions of genre, gender identity, sexuality and race. They create space for the study of seemingly excessive, exploitative or reactionary television, with a particular focus on less examined or critically maligned genres and forms that are nevertheless often widely popular. These may include syndicated anthology programmes, talk shows, game shows, true crime television and popular non-Anglophone productions.

By removing prestige or cult status as a prerequisite for serious study, B-TV enables scholars to explore the cultural and political resonances of mass television, alongside the production contexts and industrial realities too often associated exclusively with prestige programming.

The series is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. It welcomes scholarship on global subjects underrepresented in traditional Western scholarship and encourages submissions from underrepresented and marginalised scholars, including graduate students, independent scholars and those in non-tenure-track or precarious employment.
