Description

This is the first book-length project to examine the role of Shakespeare in military education and the wider application of Shakespeare in teaching students leadership, civic service and practices of social justice. Combining conceptual frameworks with practical lesson plans and exploration of approaches that can be used in any post-16 classroom setting, this will refresh and equip instructors in their teaching of Shakespeare for social values.

Marinela Golemi draws on the pedagogical philosophies and practices of U.S. military instructors, and her experience teaching Shakespeare at the United States Military Academy at West Point, to present a new leadership and civically-oriented Shakespeare pedagogy that concentrates on uncertainty and empathy. This approach embraces issues of race, gender, sexuality, disability and class that are central in Shakespearean works, but often omitted from leadership education in corporations and institutions.

Moving from a conceptual frameworks surrounding Shakespeare and military education into the practical knowledge and use of this pedagogical approach that is applicable to any classroom or educational space, the book features lesson pans and discussion of student centred learning using a number of Shakespeare plays. These include Cymbeline, Othello, Henry V, Twelfth Night, Comedy of Errors, Coriolanus and Julius Caesar. Suited to various learning communities whose primary goal is the development of engaged scholars and citizens, Shakespeare and Military Education is a hopeful response to preparing future generations of Shakespeareans for conflict, compromise, and uncertainty.
