Description
What do our conceptions of scripture reveal about the nature of God and revelation? Taido Chino compares Benjamin Warfield and Karl Barth' conceptions of scripture and divine inspiration.
This book considers what foundational theologians Benjamin Breckenridge Warfield (1851-1921) and Karl Barth (1886-1968) meant in affirming the Christian scriptures as the Word of God. Through this study, Chino crafts a systematic theology which considers how theologies of scripture are formed when varying commitments regarding the content and means of revelation are taken into account.
Chino clarifies the tensions between Warfield and Barth's shared formal commitment to scripture and negotiates the material differences in their articulation of scripture's significance. By placing these two theologians' differing approaches to the doctrine of scripture in conversation, this book reveals how situating scripture in connection to the Spirit or the Son profoundly shapes how believers understand the Bible's role within the revelatory economy. As a result, this book raises wide-ranging questions about the nature of revelation and the God-world relation.

In this illuminating volume, Taido Chino explores the critical question of what it means for Christians to hold Scripture to be the Word of God, by way of a close analysis of the positions of Benjamin Warfield and Karl Barth. In the process, Chino not only discovers deep resonances between these theological perspectives, but also identifies and explains the persistent differences, drawing attention to the distinctive doctrinal frameworks in play. The result is an account of two seminal thinkers on a central issue of the Christian faith that is at once lucidly presented and deeply insightful.

This is a rigorous and timely analysis that moves beyond the simplistic and often polemical characterizations that have marked previous engagements with this topic. By focusing on the Reformed tradition shared by Barth and Warfield, Chino establishes a credible and stable foundation for a unique side-by-side dogmatic comparison. This work leaves the reader with a deeper appreciation of both figures and a clarified sense of the centrality of Scripture for the theological endeavour. It should be essential reading for systematic theologians in the Reformed tradition.

With care and insight, Chino instructs us well in the details of the doctrine of Scripture as we meet it in the influential works of Benjamin Warfield and Karl Barth. The fundamental importance of bibliology to theology and its decisive entanglement with other elements of Christian doctrine-particularly differing emphases in pneumatology and Christology-is well-displayed and convincingly argued. This is a valuable and patient study of matters of perennial importance to Christian faith and thought.
Philip G. Ziegler, University of Aberdeen
