Description
Lucas Gregorio Moncada III explores the often ignored historical, grammatical, and lexical details in Isaiah 1:1–17 and Matthew 1:22–23, examining whether the traditional interpretation of Isaiah 7:14 is a Christian myth or a plausible prediction. Scholars have argued over the meaning of the prophecy and its fulfillment in Matthew 1:22–23; now Moncada goes beyond cursory treatments in modern studies, suggesting that Isaiah and Matthew contain essential details that deserve further exploration.
After presenting a thorough history of interpretation, Moncada analyses the message of Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:22–23 for the original audience of the texts. He discusses the authenticity of Isaiah 7:1–17, the political crisis of the Syro-Ephraimite War, the grammatical details in Isaiah 7:1–17 and Matthew 1:22–23, the reliability of the Matthean birth narrative, the ten fulfillment citations in Matthew's Gospel, and the meaning of key words such as “sign,” “virgin,” and “fulfill.” In conclusion, Moncada suggests that modern scholarship needs to reconsider the interpretation of the original prophecy's fulfillment.
