Description
This book analyzes the relationship between writing and capitalist accumulation in Latin America, from the fifteenth century to the late twentieth century.
Writing and Accumulation in Latin America: Letters of Blood and Fire studies narratives, writing, and writers from Latin America, from the fifteenth century to the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The book traces the logic of accumulation and the production of value, both economic and aesthetic, and examines the role of writers and the relationship between writing, the market, and power. Accumulation, as a system that organizes and gives value, has to be produced, and that it builds on a profusive excess: cumulation. The study argues that the transformation from cumulation into accumulation is becoming precarious. Revisiting and analyzing key moments and texts from Latin America, the volume argues the transformation from cumulation into accumulation is becoming precarious, and the distinction between accumulation and cumulation continues to blur, as the former, day by day, seems to fade away.

“Ricardo García has produced an ambitious and theoretically sophisticated intervention aimed at establishing the role of writing in the dynamics of capitalist accumulation. The book follows the tumultuous journey of the lettered subject in Latin America, considering both the chronicles of Columbus and Cortés and novels of the contemporary period, arguing convincingly that writing is key to both structuring and illuminating systems that turn mere profusion into accumulation, and, finally, to figuring the crisis brought about by the collapse of such systems.”
Joseph Patteson, Associate Professor of Spanish, Augustana University, USA

“Writing and Accumulation in Latin America offers cutting-edge contributions on the junctions of literature and accumulation. Through a sophisticated theoretical reading of the region's literary production, paired with meticulous social analysis, Ricardo García offers powerful insights into accumulation, its conditions of possibility, and ways of thinking beyond its apparent inevitability.”
José Luis Suárez Morales, Assistant Professor of World Languages & Global Studies, Texas Christian University, USA
