Description

This book provides a diverse collection of original essays by contemporary philosophers on subjects central to most people's lives: the mental and moral dimensions of sexual attraction and desire. It begins by exploring important ways of conceptualizing these mental states, and then expands into the more provocative territory of their moral and political evaluation. Sub-topics include how sexual attraction and desire relate to emotion, perception, and other motivations, such as appetites, impulses or urges; the extent to which they determine sexual orientation; ways in which (as dimensions of “lust”) they can be vicious or virtuous; aspects of sexual fantasy and fiction; ways in which they can affect sexual intimacy for trans people; ways in which autistic persons may uniquely relate to them; and even their potential effects on political movements. The book includes a variety of psychological and moral viewpoints, leaving the reader free to decide between them. While no single book can cover all aspects of this very broad subject, The Moral Psychology of Sexual Attraction and Desire presents an informative sample of topics and perspectives suitable for both university-level courses and non-academic audiences.
