Description

This book offers a rigorous, interdisciplinary exploration of how queer Christians in Hong Kong confront spiritual injury, ecclesial exclusion, and cultural marginalisation.

While theological debates about LGBTQ+ inclusion have gained increasing visibility, the voices of those who wrestle with faith, identity and belonging in their daily lives are often sidelined in both academic and ecclesial discussions. Caroline Yih responds to this gap by integrating practical theology, queer theory, postcolonial critique, and trauma-informed pastoral reflection to centre East Asian queer religious voices. Across seven chapters, this book traces a journey from invisibility and internalised shame, through grassroots resilience and cultural ritual (wei lu), to theological transformation and ecclesial critique. Central to Yih's discussion are two interwoven queries: "Where are the LGBTQ+ Christians in our churches?" and "What does their absence reveal about religious spaces which are defined as 'for all'?" Based on in-depth qualitative interviews, Yih realigns theological conversations on belonging and community, proposing an ecclesiology of wounded grace and radical hospitality. This volume strives to reframe the Church not as a unified institution, but as a space of fractured, yet co-creative belonging whilst offering theoretical and practical insights for scholars, clergy, and pastoral caregivers.
