Description
This book conducts an in-depth analysis of mestizaje (cultural and racial mixture), recentering the voices and experiences of Asian Latinxs in Latinx theology.
Despite the presence of East Asian immigrant communities in the Americas since the sixteenth century, recent academic publications in Latinx theology often neglect the presence of this Asian heritage of mestizaje. Hanna Kang shines a light on the Asian Latinx Mestizaje, affirming their unique experiences and role within American religious practices. Reflecting on and challenging the colonial legacy of racial categories which foster rivalry between minoritized communities, Kang wields the biblical narrative of Hagar and Ruth to chart a course for intercultural encounters among Asian Latinxs and other minority groups in the United States. In doing so, Kang provides a model for intercultural theology which advocates for solidarity amongst minority groups.

This book embodies an invitation to broaden our scope of what it means to be Latina/o/x and Latin America. Drawing from her Asian background and experience in Argentina, Hanna Kang uncovers some of the contested-until now neglected and silenced-identity edges of mestizaje debates across the Americas. Engaging Latina/o/x theologians, she also taps into interculturality as a generative framework for conceptualizing the coming together of multiple identities, cultures, and faith experiences

Since the colonial period and Catarina de San Juan, 'la China Poblana,' Asians have had a prophetic religious presence in Latin America. It has taken four hundred years, but Hanna Kang opens the first comprehensive conversation about Asian-Latinxs from a theological perspective. This book makes a much-needed contribution to Latinx theology and the academic literature on mestizaje.

Unlike any work I have seen to date, Kang's rethinking of mestizaje, one of the foundational concepts of Latinx theology skillfully developed by Elizondo in the 80's, takes the notion of hybridity to a new level, one which prophetically creates, not only an innovative bridge between the Americas and Asia, but also re-envisions living connections between Bible and human experience. Meticulously researched, it draws extensively from contemporary, intercultural scholarship and brings to light the imaginative work of a new generation of Latina scholars.
