Description
Grounded in a theoretical framework of masculinity studies, this book examines the films of Rituparno Ghosh and offers a novel analysis of the portrayal of men in cinema. Through Ghosh's work, this book investigates the depiction of men, masculinities, and their intersections with the institutions of class, caste, state, media, age, and family dynamics. The authors examine contemporary performances of bhadralok masculinity in select cinematic texts through the theoretical frameworks of salaryman masculinity, gendered spaces of the 1990s neoliberal Kolkata, fatherhood, and masculine ideas of aging and disability. With careful analysis, this book challenges the monolithic ideas of masculine identity in cinema and challenges the film industry to modernize its portrayal of men.

“Bhadralok Masculinities is a stimulating intervention into masculinities studies, pushing the field to global dimensions that critically nuance any discussion of the impact of gendered positioning.”
Malcah Effron, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
-
"An indispensable read for scholars of South Asian cinema and gender, this book is a rigorous examination of the friction between bygone masculine ideals and contemporary performance and is essential for understanding the profound challenges faced when enacting these historical ideas of masculinity in an altered socio-cultural context."
Smriti Srivastava, Daman and Diu Government College, India

"This book discusses the socio-temporal construction of 'bhadrolok masculinity' as men shuffle between their urge to control and assert themselves on one hand and their inner vulnerabilities on the other. The conceptualisation of 'bhadrolok masculinity' is indeed an immensely powerful contribution, as the authors posit it as a performative act informed by matrices of heterogeneous historical and cultural forces. This book is a must read by scholars interested in masculinity, film, and media studies."
Payel Pal, LNM Institute of Information Technology, Jaipur
