Librarians know the value of building community partnerships-but what's the best way to initiate and sustain them?
Purposeful partnerships help libraries meet the needs of individuals and varying community groups. Tyler Hahn shows how working with other organizations can help libraries uphold their missions and offer more effective services to their communities. He shares on-the-ground examples and practical tips to help librarians, teachers, and community leaders build strong collaborations, covering everything from teaming up with schools and local businesses to working with the government and non-profit groups. Including information on beginning, building, and sustaining partnerships; community engagement; ethical considerations; and future trends, Hahn provides a hands-on toolkit for implementing partnerships that will benefit both your library and your community partners. Reading The Community Partnership Handbook for Small Libraries, I found myself regularly nodding in affirmation, and frankly, in gratitude. I would recommend this handbook for any small or rural library to use as a practical guide to building and maintaining strategic partnerships. But I'd take it a step further. Despite small and rural libraries making up the vast majority of public libraries in the United States and being invaluable to the communities they serve, they still struggle to be seen and valued at the national and even local level. This book will aid the reader is truly seeing some of the realities facing our smallest institutions and rural communities. Strategic partnerships are essential for raising awareness, expanding resources, and better meeting the needs of the library's service area. Anyone working in or for one of these beloved community hubs will find this book to be an approachable road map to building their partnerships, step by step, with actual forms, checklists, and other guiding tools. Additionally, author Tyler Hahn achieves something very uncommon by providing a compelling, non-fiction account of the day-to-day realities of America's libraries. Folks in any field wanting to better understand the unique challenges faced by small towns and rural areas would do well to read this book, which is clearly rooted in direct experience and proven outcomes. Those who work with, govern, or advocate for libraries will do us all a favor by educating themselves within these pages.

As a fellow librarian and past president of ARSL, I immediately recognized the heart of this book-grounded in real communities, real challenges, and the kind of practical solutions we all wish we had a little sooner. Tyler Hahn brings both experience and authenticity to this guide for small and rural libraries, showing how to build partnerships that are thoughtful, sustainable, and truly achievable. This is the kind of resource you'll return to often-especially when you're trying to make one more thing work with limited time and staff (which is to say, always). An essential and genuinely useful handbook for librarians and anyone working alongside small libraries to strengthen their communities.

If you are new to libraries or have been involved for a while, you will find this handbook essential for your success in preserving and advocating for the relevance of your library. Hahn provides specific steps, examples, and guaranteed guidance for reaching out to your local community. I wish I had something like this when I started my career. By following the examples and steps he has laid out, you will enhance the vitality of your library. You can't go wrong with this handbook.
