Description

In the age of machine decision making, is it possible to consider AI as possessing virtues – or are these merely human value judgements? This edited volume brings together three aspects of everyday life that have been immeasurably altered by digital technology: questions of epistemology, identity, and ethics. Uniting contributions from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, the volume explores how concepts of knowledge formation, self-perception, and ethical relations have been transformed and thrown into question in recent years. Upon this everchanging philosophical terrain, which shifts with each new AI innovation, this volume resists both technological determinism and anthropomorphic inflation. Instead, it situates generative AI within a broader virtue-theoretical and inherently social framework that foregrounds aspects of human practices, dispositions, and forms of life.

From educational challenges to AI in therapy, and from aesthetic judgements to virtue ethics, it offers a nuanced account of how emerging AI technologies reconfigure the conditions of moral and epistemic agency-conditions under which human self-understanding, responsibility, and character continue to be negotiated and developed rather than supplanted. In connecting a range of pertinent social and ethical issues, this urgent volume will inform both debates in philosophy of technology and ethics, as well as broader conversations about the future of agency, responsibility, and virtue in digitally mediated and AI-infused societies.
