Description
This book examines one of the earliest theological appropriations of phenomenology: Erich Przywara's reformulation of the analogy of being as a phenomenological category.
Drawing on previously unpublished archival material, Scerri reconstructs the overlooked personal and intellectual relationships between Przywara and the leading phenomenologists of his time - Husserl, Scheler and Heidegger. This analysis reveals Przywara's deep engagement with the thought of these philosophers, as well as his appropriation of their phenomenological insights.
Read against this background, Przywara's project, especially his Analogia Entis, emerges as a reception, critique and development of phenomenology in a theological and analogical mode.
Rescuing Przywara from Karl Barth's shadow, From Phenomenology to Analogy sheds new light on his thought, the analogy of being, and the complex relationship between theology and phenomenology.

It is gradually being recognized that Erich Przywara (1889-1972) was the most significant German Catholic thinker of the first half of the twentieth century, and the only serious Catholic rival to Karl Barth and Martin Heidegger. Until now, though, there has been no full-length study of his engagement with phenomenology. In this excellent study based on the most up-to-date research, Carl Scerri has more than made up for this lack. Now, finally, we can see what Przywara has to offer.
