Description
This open access transnational and cross-cultural study of Holocaust representation in contemporary literature highlights the evolving state of Holocaust memory as direct witnesses fade and new generations reshape the pivotal trauma of the 20th century for 21st-century audiences.
How does contemporary culture confront the legacy of the Holocaust? Exploring 21st-century literature, media, and material culture from a broad range of contexts and perspectives, The Holocaust in 21st-Century Literature contributes new perspectives to critical conversations about reading the Holocaust in an era without witnesses.
The volume's authors analyze the proliferation of Holocaust representation in family memoirs, children's books, young adult fiction, and graphic novels alongside the florescence of writing about matters of historical responsibility and complicity. The volume examines a geographically diverse corpus of authors and texts from Israel, the United States, Canada, Australia, Latin America, and Europe, including the former Eastern Bloc countries, such as Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. It also includes chapters on digital representations and an interview with British author, Lucy Adlington.
Unconventional contexts, crossover genres, and urgent new voices emerge in this expansive, comparative study of how authors experiment with fresh ways of broaching a signal disaster of the 20th century in literary terms suited to the 21st century.
