Description
This book serves as a guidebook for the language teacher education (LTE) field and programs by providing language teacher educators, administrators, and leaders with the knowledge, background and expertise needed to teach about social-emotional learning (SEL). It is full of ideas and practices that language teacher educators can use to prepare for SEL.
In this volume, SEL is conceptualized in LTE as the process in which pre- and in-service language teachers engage in deep explorations of their identity, develop an awareness of and learn to regulate their emotions, contemplate their behavior, and critically analyze the effects of well-being in language teaching and learning. The ultimate goal of SEL in LTE is to help pre- and in-service language teachers recognize how the synergy of identity, emotions, behavior, and well-being directly affects their teaching practices, behaviors, effectiveness, and the success of their students.
The authors consider SEL and social justice in LTE, and the importance of SEL practices as part of LTE to prepare teachers on how to work through the realities they face in classrooms, beyond teaching their language objectives. They also demonstrate the process of incorporating SEL into LTE syllabi or programs through step-by-step scenarios. Lesson examples within courses, such as literacy in the content areas, world languages, and bilingual education courses in LTE, are also included.
The book includes 'Meet the Language Teacher Educator' sections, where language teacher educators discuss how they prepare for SEL; 'Spotlight' sections where administrators and language teacher educators reflect on their methods when integrating SEL within their LTE courses and programs; and 'SEL in Action' sections, featuring language teacher educators who explain practice elements of SEL in teacher field experience/placement and mentoring through their own practice.
