Description

Despite their break-up in 1980, Led Zeppelin continue to fascinate readers and attract new listeners. Many have written about the band, often about their reputation or their antics on tour, but few have tried to answer the question of why their music is so powerful and timeless for so many people. In short, what makes Led Zeppelin's music epic-a word that appears time and again in descriptions of the band's songs?

To answer that question, this book takes a unique analytical approach: each song is understood as a narrative, a story told not only through words and music, but also through sound-how the song was recorded, mixed and mastered in the studio. These elements: lyrics, music, recording studio aesthetics, even the album art, are examined in detail and pieced together to form both textual and sonic narratives.

This volume considers the sounds of the recording and how they affect us as creative listeners who co-create these epic stories. Additionally, the individual analyses are woven together into a larger story, a metanarrative, that highlights a central theme in Led Zeppelin's repertoire: the heroic quest for wisdom. Rigour and creativity thus join forces in a mythic, musical pursuit that appeals both to our creative and analytical nature, as we seek to uncover how these songs have the power to transcend generations, just as the epics of the past.
