Description
Formed in Melbourne in 2010, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (KGLW) are a prolific and eclectic rock band who are known for their marathon concerts and devoted fandom. By the end of 2026, KGLW had released twenty-eight albums along with an ever-growing number of live recordings. Their catalog includes explorations of garage rock, electronic dance music, jazz fusion, heavy metal, pop psychedelia, progressive rock, microtonal composition, and blues rock. It also contains storylines and elements of a complex “lore” populated with dragons, doomsday cults, sentient planets, and androids-expanded and further developed with the participation of fan interpreters and content creators.
Using the tools of comparative mythology, Am I in Heaven? looks at KGLW's music and storyworld and places them in the context of metamodernism, which comporises contemporary media, political movements, and ways of life characterized by superhybridity and oscillation and shaped by unfolding environmental catastrophes, rapidly advancing technological innovation, and a culture that embraces the notion of everything, everywhere, all at once.
