Description

Focusing on the most recent developments of archaeological research on ancient Egyptian and Nubian textiles, this book brings together contributions from experimental archaeology, iconography and philology. As well as discussing large assemblages of ancient textiles, the contributors also present new research into the production of textiles, by focusing on the experiences of the craftspeople and different aspects of the textile industry.

Divided into three sections, this volume looks at the broader significance of textiles and their impact on society. The first part is dedicated to fibres, threads and the tools that make the fabrics. The second section examines the archaeological findings in the Nile Valley and discusses the challenges surrounding conservation and heritage. The final part brings together iconographical and philological evidence, and reveals what insights they can offer regarding the economic and social structure of ancient Egypt and Sudan. The result is an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to textiles and textile production in the Nile Valley.
