Description
This volume critically examines the pedagogical interventions and educational frameworks that can address the urgent need for critical anti-racist approaches in language education. It shapes these examinations around key themes including:
- how language teacher education contributes to students' understanding of racism as a structuring element of society rather than an individual attitude;
- approaches to addressing and counteracting racist practices in language classrooms;
- developing critical anti-racist awareness in pre-service teachers;
- evaluating and adapting language learning materials;
- implementing critical anti-racist practices across different educational contexts.
In each chapter, contributors analyze the complex interplay between language, power, and identity, exploring how linguistic choices can either perpetuate or challenge racial hierarchies. The collection also addresses the challenges of researching and implementing critical anti-racist pedagogies, including backlash and institutional constraints. Through this volume's diverse theoretical frameworks and practical applications teacher education programs and professional development initiatives can address, confront, or resist racist ideologies in and through language teaching.
